Bumper pad madness!!

We all know that bumper pads in the crib are dang cute and they seem like a must! However, Avery has become quite the crazy sleeper. She's everywhere!! Erik and I are so nervous she is going to suffocate in those dang bumpers because she gets her face right in them. I check on her at least once a night. Last night I got up at three am, went and checked on her and she was kind of stirring a little. I found her grabbing onto to the bumper, pulling it down over her face, trying to get it in her mouth and all the while, she's still asleep!! I moved her back to the middle of the crib and went back to bed. I couldn't sleep so I checked on her again. Low and behold she was at it again, trying to get the bumper pad into her mouth. We normally don't feed her at night, but something told me she might be hungry. So here I am at three thirty feeding her. I put her back to sleep and she does it again. I was so bugged, Erik and I ripped them out. She was mad and threw a fit. We thought we would let her cry it out for a bit. We must have been so tired cause neither of us know when or if she stopped crying. Erik woke to her screaming at five thirty. He went and got her, came barging through our bedroom door, screaming, "She is having an allergic reaction!" I jumped out of bed to find her eyes and lips completely swollen. Erik ran to the nearest pharmacy for benadryl. Crying usually doesn't make her lips swell so I checked her body for any bug bites and nothing. By the time Erik got home, the swelling had already gone down quite a bit. We are so confused as to what happened. We're thinking maybe she was sucking on the crib and the paint caused a reaction. Who the heck knows. I guess I'll never take those dang bumper pads out again.

bumper pads are crazy! a lot of people say they aren't safe once your baby starts rolling and stuff! but heck if she is allergicl to something what can you do? babies are such a mystery some times!

That is wierd, can you think of anything new that you had given her recently? Maybe she is allergic to a new food? Did you get my post about saturday before fathers day?

The fun times that come along with parenthood huh? It is such a guessing game. You are good to only check on her one time, Mia loved to burry her face in the bumper pad and that is how she slept from the second I put her in her crib she would go straight to it. I was checking on her CONSTANTLY the whole night. Sometimes I would get back into bed and get right back up to check on her. It got so bad that I ordered one of those monitor things that you put under the mattress that tells you if they haven't moved for 20 seconds. I wasn't sleeping at all. It will be interesting to see what Ayla does once she starts rolling. Good Luck!

I did the exact same thing with Grace! She is a crazy sleeper 2 so I finally took them out only to find her screeming because her head was stuck between the crib rails and the crib mattress!! Who knows? So I put them back on- But that allergic reaction is scary! I'm glad she is okay!

So sad though about the allergic reaction. I wouldn't know what caused it but hopefully that doesn't happen again. I love you new blog background and pictures too.

Hi I just read your comment. YES I totally want one, actually I need 2 clips.... she always wears pig tails. Her dress for the 4th has blue with white polka dots just like the one in the picture. Then it has red and white striped ribbon straps... but the one you made for her is so cute. I never learned to make bows... my mom always made the flowers and hats for me. I can't seem to make the bows correctly. How much do you charge for them?

You made that bow! So cute! Crazy about the bumper pads! I am so sorry! I've always read that they aren't good to have, but I love the look of them so I just blew it off!

That is so scary! There's no way to know which is worse, bumper pads or no bumper pads! I'm glad that it wasn't too serious!

Eva totally loved to snuggle up to her bumper pad. She still likes to cover her face. I don't worry about it anymore but I know I did when she was Avery's age. But she's probably just fine at her age. If she can move to get to the bumper she can move to get away if she needs to. It's hard not to worry though!

Oh my gosh!! Poor little thing. Poor you, too. That is the worst- wishing your baby would stop crying only to realize they have a legitimate reason for the screams... I always feel like a lousy mom when I do that... and I have done it a few times. :) Happens to the best of us.
